Christian meditation differs from other forms of meditation because it does not require us to empty our minds and hearts, nor does it encourage a preoccupation with self. When people hear the word meditation, an automatic word association seems to take place, i.e. meditation equals Transcendental Meditation (TM). Unfortunately, Christians seem to be unaware of their own rich Christian tradition in meditation that originates in the Bible. It is not surprising then, that many have described meditation and contemplative prayer as the best kept secret in the church. When we meditate it’s as though we are sending roots down into the rich soil of God’s love, and it is there that we meet with him and are nourished. It’s from this place of intimacy and deep refreshment that we gain inner strength, stability, and clarity of vision. Meditation protects our health and well being, ensuring that we have the resources we need to serve God. Meditating on God’s Word helps us to know God and his truth, and to apply that truth to our lives. It also helps us to know the character of Christ so that we can become more Christ-like. Meditating on God’s Word helps us to resist the devil and stand firm because the Word has become part of our spiritual armour.
